Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across the Ohio Valley
Dishes Coming Out Dirty
If your dishwasher runs a full cycle and the dishes come out dirty, the problem is almost always water force, water temperature, or water carrying the last load's food back onto the plates. Gritty film, oatmeal welded to a bowl, cloudy glasses, we see all of it around Louisville and up and down the river valley, where hard water makes everything worse. Here's how we work through it. Cheapest causes first, before anybody buys a part.

What "not cleaning" actually tells us
Dirty dishes mean the water isn't hitting them hard enough, or it isn't hot enough, or it's full of the last load's food. Different problems, different fixes. So the first thing we ask is where the mess sits. Film on everything points toward water chemistry or temperature. Debris stuck to the top rack usually means a clogged filter or drain. One clean corner and one filthy corner says a spray arm is blocked, or the rack is loaded so tall the arm can't swing past it. The pattern tells us more than the smell does.
Cause family one: loading, filter, and rinse habits
This is the cheap fix, and it's the real answer more often than people expect. Bottom filters pack up with seeds, labels, and grease. Spray arm holes plug with limestone scale and broken-off toothpicks. Tall cutting boards and cookie sheets on the left side stop the arm cold. Detergent that's old or caked or stuck in a closed dispenser never dissolves, and powder that sat in a humid basement all summer is basically a rock. Then there's overloading. If plates shingle against each other, water never gets to the middle of the stack.
Cause family two: water that's too cool or too hard
Dishwasher detergent needs hot water. Set the water heater low, or put the kitchen at the far end of a long pipe run in an older shotgun house, and that first fill shows up lukewarm. Run the kitchen tap hot before you start the cycle. That one habit clears up a lot of complaints. Hard water is the other half of the valley problem. Limestone minerals leave a chalky haze on glasses and dull the inside of the tub. Rinse aid helps, and so does a periodic cleaning cycle with a dishwasher-safe descaler.
Cause family three: pump, valve, or spray pressure
If the basics check out, the machine may not be moving water the way it should. A weak wash pump will leave dishes dirty. So will a partly blocked circulation path, an inlet valve that underfills, or a diverter that won't switch between the upper and lower arms, and the cycle looks perfectly normal the whole time. We listen for a quiet wash with no rhythmic spray sound, a cycle that runs way longer than it used to, or standing water in the bottom when it's done. Those are inside-the-machine problems. That's where a homeowner should stop and call.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe for you: pull the bottom rack, lift out the filter, rinse it under the tap with a soft brush. Spin both spray arms by hand and make sure a toothpick passes through every hole. Look at the door gasket and the detergent cup. Run hot water at the sink first. Confirm nothing tall is blocking the arm. What we add: we measure fill volume and incoming water temperature, check pump amp draw, read fault codes, and inspect the sump and check valve. We work with the panels off, power isolated, and the right meters on hand. Call us and tell us where the dirt sits.
Dishes Coming Out Dirty — fast answers
Should I rinse my dishes before loading?
Scrape, don't rinse. Detergent needs some soil to work against. But get the bones, seeds, rice, and labels off, because those are what pack the filter and end up back on your top rack.
Why are my glasses cloudy but the plates look fine?
That's usually hard water minerals, not a mechanical fault. Louisville-area water is mineral heavy. Try rinse aid and a descaling cycle. If the haze won't wipe off while the glass is wet, it's etching, and that's permanent.
Is a long cycle a sign of trouble?
It can be. Plenty of machines stretch the cycle while they wait on water to come up to temperature. But if yours suddenly runs an hour longer than it used to, mention that when you call us.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Ring us or fill in the form, then describe the noise, the smell, or the puddle. Brand and rough age help too. Those small details narrow down the part before anyone drives to your door.
- Step 2
We set a window
You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours, and we text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls. Tell us where the machine sits.
- Step 3
Diagnose and repair
Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. If something has to be ordered, we schedule the return trip before we leave.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements and clogs dishwasher jets, and it crusts up valves until they stick. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup behind it, then tell you how to slow the next round down.
- River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings and sours washer gaskets, and it stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms have it worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
- Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us, and no brand tells us what to say. When we talk about repairing versus replacing, that advice is ours alone.
- Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens come with narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds and protect trim, and heavy units move slowly. When we leave, the only change in your house should be a working appliance.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
