How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year suits most households. Bigger families, long duct runs, or pet hair in the mix push that shorter. If drying time has crept up over a season, that's your signal, no matter what the calendar says.
Can I just use a brush kit from the hardware store?
On a short, straight run to an exterior wall, sometimes. Longer runs with elbows tend to pack lint where a consumer brush can't reach, and a rod can separate a joint inside the wall without you knowing.
Is flexible foil hose okay behind the dryer?
Most codes call for rigid or semi-rigid metal transition duct, kept short. Thin foil and plastic accordion hose crush behind the machine and hold lint in every ridge. We swap those out when we find them.
My vent goes up through the roof. Does that matter?
It matters. Vertical runs fight gravity, and lint settles back down toward the dryer. Roof caps also collect nests. Those runs need cleaning from both ends and a look at the cap itself.
Why is the laundry room so humid?
