Ice Maker Repair — Book a Visit Today
Ice makers quit in slow motion. First the cubes shrink. Then they come out cloudy, or hollow, or stuck together in one gray brick. Then nothing. Behind that you usually find a frozen fill tube, a tired water inlet valve, a failed thermostat or module, or a saddle valve choked with limestone scale — the Ohio Valley's calling card. Our visit starts with water pressure at the valve and temperature in the freezer, because both fake a dozen other problems. We test the harvest cycle, check the fill line for ice plugs, and look at the filter age. We repair all major brands as an independent shop. Call us and tell us what the cubes look like — that detail alone narrows it.

The ice maker symptoms we hear most
- Cubes are tiny and hollow Low water pressure, clogged filter, or a partly frozen fill tube
- It makes ice but tastes like the freezer Old filter, absorbed odors, stale ice sitting in the bin
- Water on the floor under the fridge Leaking inlet valve, cracked supply line, or misaligned fill tube
- Whole bin is one frozen slab Slow melt-and-refreeze from door seals, overfill, or a stuck ejector
- Arm is down but nothing happens Failed control module, thermostat, or no water reaching the valve
Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Confirm the ice maker's wire arm or switch is in the on position — it gets bumped constantly.
- 2Check the shutoff valve behind or under the fridge is fully open, not half-turned.
- 3Note how old the water filter is; six months past due is a common cause of thin cubes.
- 4Set a glass of water in the freezer for an hour and see if it freezes solid — that tells us about temperature.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Ring us or fill in the form. Describe the noise, the smell, the puddle. Give us the brand and rough age. Small details narrow the part before anyone drives to your door.
- Step 2
We set a window
You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours. We text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls, so tell us where the machine sits.
- Step 3
Diagnose and repair
Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. Anything ordered, we schedule the return before we leave.

Guides & troubleshooting
Ice Maker Repair — quick answers
Why did my ice maker stop after we changed the filter?
Air gets trapped in the line during a filter swap. Sometimes the filter is not seated all the way, which blocks flow. Run several glasses from the dispenser to purge air, then give it a full day to cycle again.
Is hard water really hurting my ice maker?
Yes. Limestone scale builds inside the inlet valve and fill tube, narrowing the opening a little at a time. Cubes get smaller, then stop. Regular filter changes slow it down, but scaled parts eventually need replacing.
How long should a new ice maker take to make ice?
Plan on about twenty-four hours for the first useful batch. The freezer has to hold a steady temperature before the harvest cycle runs reliably. If nothing appears after a full day, something upstream needs looking at.
Can you fix just the ice maker, or is it the whole fridge?
Often just the ice maker. But a freezer running warm, a failing defrost system, or bad door seals can all show up as an ice problem first. We check the surrounding causes before swapping the unit.
My ice smells bad. Is that a repair?
Usually not a mechanical failure. Ice absorbs odors from open food and from a bin that has sat too long. Dump the bin, wash it, replace the filter. If the smell returns fast, call us and we will look further.
Do you work on ice makers in older homes?
We do. Older shotgun houses often have small-diameter or corroded supply lines and aging saddle valves feeding the fridge. That plumbing side matters as much as the appliance, and we check it as part of the visit.

Why homeowners call us
- Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements, clogs dishwasher jets, and crusts up valves. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup that caused it, then tell you how to slow it down.
- River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings, sours washer gaskets, and stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms suffer worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
- Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us and no brand tells us what to say. Our advice about repairing or replacing is only ours.
- Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens have narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds, protect trim, and move heavy units slowly. When we leave, the only change should be a working appliance.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
