Refrigerator Not Cooling

You opened the fridge this morning and the milk was warm. The light works. You may even hear a hum. But the shelves feel like room temperature, and the freezer is soft. That mix of "it's running but not cooling" is one of the calls we take most in Louisville and out across the river counties. Here's what it usually means.

What "running but not cooling" actually tells us

A fridge does not make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. So when food goes warm, either the cold air is not being made, or it is not being moved where it belongs. That difference matters. If the freezer is still hard-frozen but the fresh food side is warm, air movement is the likely story. If both sides are warm, the cooling system itself is in question. Note which one you have before you call. It saves time on the phone and helps us bring the right part on the first trip.

Cause family one: airflow and frost

Cheapest first. Cold air is blown from the freezer into the fridge through a vent. Block that vent with a stack of casserole dishes or a full bag of bread, and the fresh food side warms up while the freezer stays fine. Frost buildup does the same thing from the inside. In our humid river-valley summers, a door that gets opened often, or a worn gasket that lets moist air seep in, grows frost fast on the evaporator. When that coil ices over, the fan can't push air through it. You may hear the fan turn loud, then quiet, then loud again.

Cause family two: dirty coils and a hot kitchen

The condenser coil sits under or behind the fridge. It sheds heat. Pack it with dust, pet hair, and the fine grit that collects in older shotgun houses with floor vents, and the heat has nowhere to go. The compressor runs longer and longer and still loses ground. Warm signs: the sides or back feel hot to the touch, the motor almost never shuts off, and the problem is worse in July. A fridge crowded into a tight cabinet with no breathing room behind it has the same trouble. Give it a few inches of clear space.

Cause family three: controls, fans, and sealed system

After airflow and coils, the causes get more involved. A defrost timer or thermostat can fail and leave the unit stuck. An evaporator fan motor can seize, so cold air is made but never delivered. A condenser fan can quit, which cooks the compressor. Beyond that sits the sealed refrigerant system, and that is a different category of work. Diagnosis matters here because a warm fridge with a dead fan and a warm fridge with a refrigerant problem look identical from the kitchen. We test rather than guess. Replacing a part on a hunch is how people spend money twice.

Safe checks you can do, and where to stop

Do these first. Pull items away from the rear vents inside. Check that the temperature dial or display was not bumped to a warm setting, which happens more than you'd think. Feel the door gasket for gaps and clean it with mild soap. Vacuum the grille at the base. Make sure the door closes fully and the fridge is not shoved against the wall. Confirm the outlet is live by testing a lamp in it. Stop there. Do not remove interior back panels, thaw coils with a hair dryer, or touch anything electrical inside the machine. Call us and describe what you found.

What we do differently on the visit

We arrive with meters, not opinions. We read actual temperatures in both compartments, check the defrost cycle, test fan motors under load, and look at amp draw on the compressor. We inspect the coil, the drain, and the gaskets. Limestone hard water in this area is rough on ice makers and water lines, so we check those too while the panel is off. Then we tell you plainly what failed, what it takes to fix, and whether the repair makes sense for the age of the unit. If it doesn't, we say so. We repair all major brands as an independent shop.

Refrigerator Not Cooling — quick answers

Should I unplug the fridge overnight to reset it?

Unplugging for several hours can melt frost off an iced coil, and cooling may return for a few days. That's a clue, not a fix. It points to a defrost problem that will come back.

Why is my freezer cold but the fridge is warm?

That pattern usually means cold air isn't reaching the upper section. Common culprits are a frosted evaporator, a blocked interior vent, or a failed circulating fan. The cooling system itself is often fine.

How long should I wait before calling?

If food is above 40 degrees, move it to a cooler now. Try the simple checks the same day. If nothing changes within a few hours of cooling time, call us.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Ring us or fill in the form. Describe the noise, the smell, the puddle. Give us the brand and rough age. Small details narrow the part before anyone drives to your door.

  2. Step 2

    We set a window

You get a visit window that fits your day, not ours. We text when the van is close. Older shotgun houses have tight halls, so tell us where the machine sits.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose and repair

Our tech tests the machine, shows you what failed, and explains the fix in plain words. Common parts ride in the van. Anything ordered, we schedule the return before we leave.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water is our daily workLimestone water scales heating elements, clogs dishwasher jets, and crusts up valves. We see it every week here. So we look past the error code to the mineral buildup that caused it, then tell you how to slow it down.
  • River-valley damp changes thingsHumidity in this valley rusts dryer housings, sours washer gaskets, and stalls condensate drains. Basement laundry rooms suffer worst. We check venting and drainage on every laundry call, because a dry machine stays fixed longer.
  • Independent, all major brandsWe work on refrigerators, ranges, ovens, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from every major maker. No brand pays us and no brand tells us what to say. Our advice about repairing or replacing is only ours.
  • Old houses, careful handsShotgun homes and pre-war kitchens have narrow doorways, soft floors, and odd wiring. We pad thresholds, protect trim, and move heavy units slowly. When we leave, the only change should be a working appliance.
  • All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
