What "two cycles" is actually telling you
A dryer doesn't really dry clothes. It heats air, pushes that air through the drum, then shoves the wet air outside. Slow down any step in that chain and the clothes stay damp while the machine runs longer trying to catch up. When the drum still gets hot but the load comes out wet, the heat is doing its job and the exhaust isn't. That's the most common story we hear in Louisville and across the river. Add valley humidity and a basement laundry room, and a marginal vent turns into a two-cycle vent fast. Treat long dry times as an airflow symptom until something proves otherwise.
Cause one: lint in the vent line
Start with the cheapest possibility, because it's also the likeliest. Lint gets past the screen every load. It sticks to the ridges inside flexible duct, to elbows, and to that little flapper hood outside. Over a couple of years it builds a felt lining that chokes the pipe. Older shotgun houses often have long runs through crawlspaces or up through a wall, which gives lint more places to settle. The signs are plain. The laundry room feels hot and muggy, the back panel of the dryer is warm, and the outside hood barely puffs while the machine runs. A full duct cleaning takes care of a surprising number of these calls.
Cause two: crushed, sagging, or badly routed duct
Push a dryer back against the wall and the flexible duct behind it folds flat. That kink by itself can double dry time. Foil and vinyl duct also sags between joists and collects water in the low spot, and in a humid basement that water never evaporates. Look at how the pipe travels. Every 90-degree elbow acts like extra feet of pipe, so a vent that snakes across a ceiling and out a gable end is fighting you the whole way. We often replace crushed flex with smooth rigid metal and shorten the path. Not glamorous work. It's the fix that lasts.
Cause three: heat and controls inside the machine
If the vent checks out clean and the drum never really gets hot, the problem is inside the machine. Electric dryers use a heating element and a set of safety thermostats. Gas dryers use an igniter, a valve, and flame sensors. Either system can fail partway and give you weak heat instead of no heat, which feels like a slow dryer. Moisture sensor bars inside the drum can also pick up a film of fabric softener and tell the control board the load is already dry. None of that is homeowner territory. It means panels off, power isolated, meter readings taken.
