The Two-Minute Habit That Prevents Most of It
Pull the lint screen every single load. Not most loads. Every one. About once a month, take the screen to the sink and scrub it with warm water and a little dish soap, because dryer sheets leave an invisible film that blocks air even when the screen looks clean. Rinse it, dry it all the way, put it back. While you're back there, look behind the dryer and make sure the flex duct isn't crushed against the wall or kinked into an S. Give the machine a few inches of room. That habit alone keeps most vents out of trouble.
How Often the Line Itself Needs Cleaning
For a typical household running four to six loads a week with a short, straight vent run, once a year is a fair schedule. Move to every six months if any of these fit you: a long duct run, more than two elbows, a vent that exits through the roof, a big family doing laundry daily, or pets that shed. Signs It's Already Past Prevention
Watch for clothes still damp after a full cycle, or the outside of the dryer hot to the touch. The laundry room turns hot and humid during a run. Loads come out smelling burnt or musty. Go outside while the dryer runs and check the vent hood: little or no air moving, or a flap that never opens, tells you plenty. Lint on the floor behind the machine is another one. If the dryer shuts off partway through and won't restart until it cools, that's usually a thermal fuse or limit switch tripping on overheating, and the vent is the reason. Stop using it and call us.

A clean vent and a dryer that still won't heat is a different job. That points to a heating element, a thermostat, a thermal fuse, or the timer, and those live behind panels. Don't open them. Gas models add a burner and igniter to the list, and gas is never a homeowner check. Here's the safe test you can do. Disconnect nothing, run the dryer on air-fluff, and hold your hand at the outside vent hood. Strong airflow means the duct is likely clear, and weak or none means it isn't.
