Spring: pollen, damp basements, and washers that smell
Yellow dust coats everything for weeks. It gets pulled into dryer intakes, refrigerator condenser coils, and the vents on window units. At the same time, basements get damp and cool. Washers that sit in a humid basement start smelling sour because the door gasket never dries out. We get a lot of calls in April about a musty front-loader and a dryer that suddenly runs long. Pull the lint screen and wash it in warm water with a brush. Vacuum around the dryer and behind the fridge. Leave the washer door cracked open between loads and wipe the rubber gasket dry.
Summer: humidity is the real load
Ohio Valley summers are wet air, not just hot air. A refrigerator in a garage or a closed-up kitchen runs longer because it's fighting moisture as much as heat. Ice makers slow down. Freezers frost up faster when the door seal is weak, because humid air sneaks in and condenses. Dryers take longer when the outside air is already saturated. This is when compressors and condenser fans that were already tired finally quit. Before June, vacuum the coils under or behind the fridge. Check the door gasket by closing a dollar bill in it, then pulling. If it slides out easy, the seal is soft.
Fall: everything comes back on at once
Ovens sit idle all summer, then get used hard starting in October. That first big holiday bake is when a bad bake element or a drifting temperature shows up. Same story with the dishwasher when the house fills with company. Fall is also when leaves and nests block dryer vent hoods outside. Go outside and look at the vent flap while the dryer runs. It should be pushing steady warm air. If the flap barely moves, the duct is clogged. Run the oven up to 350 a few weeks before you need it and see if it holds heat and smells normal.
Winter: cold garages and hard water
An appliance in an unheated garage or on a cold back porch is working outside its comfort zone. Garage refrigerators may stop cycling because the room is colder than the thermostat expects, so the freezer thaws. Water lines to ice makers can freeze in an outside wall. Hard water shows itself now too. Limestone in the supply leaves scale on dishwasher heaters and water heater elements, so glasses come out gritty and cycles run long. Keep the garage door closed on freezing nights. Run a dishwasher cleaner monthly. If a laundry room shares an outside wall, leave the door open on the coldest nights.
What to check before each season turns
Four short jobs cover most of it. One, vacuum refrigerator coils twice a year, spring and fall. Two, clear the dryer duct all the way to the outside hood, not just the lint screen. Three, look at supply hoses behind the washer for bulges, rust at the fittings, or damp spots. Four, wipe door gaskets on the fridge, freezer, washer, and dishwasher, and check they still grip. Humid outside air holds less extra moisture, so drying slows some. But a big jump usually means a restricted vent. Check the outside hood flap while the dryer runs. Weak airflow points to a clogged duct.
Should I keep a refrigerator in the garage through winter?
You can, but many models struggle when the room drops below about 40 degrees. The freezer may thaw because the cooling system stops cycling. Keeping the garage above freezing helps. Call us if the freezer softens.
